I have slowly pieced together my own small home gym. I didn’t want to spend a ton of money, but have wanted decent stuff, so I have been patient, and bought stuff used.
The first thing I bought was a Treadmill. I had been watching for a while, before I got a good deal on a Proform J6si for $250 off of ebay. It was local, so I didn’t have to pay any shipping. This treadmill is what I use the most for my training.
The next piece of equipment that I bought was a Precor 718e climbing machine for $50 also off of ebay. I have used it a little bit, but haven’t so much since I started running, and training for marathons.
The next piece of equipment was free! It was a Cycleops wind trainer. I had been considering buy a trainer of some sort to hook my bike up to. But then one day on my way to work, something caught my eye. Someone had placed a wind trainer out on the curb. I stopped my car, and threw it in the back seat. I now have my Trek 1000 bike set up on it. I goof around on it mostly, maybe doing a short spinning session about once a week.
My next purchase was a Proform 545e Elliptical machine. I found it listed on Craigslist, and paid $80 for it. But I was forced to dissamble it to get it into my car to get it home. In the process of taking it apart, I mangled the axle caps to removed them. I ended up paying $20 (mostly shipping costs) to order replacement parts. So the total cost of the elliptical machine was about $100. My wife primarily used this machine.

Hopefully you might see this:
i have the chance to get a 1990 trek 1000 …. however … I’m a) wondering about how much it weighs, stock and b)wondering how the frame handles replacements with modern components. Any insight? what do you think about the 1000?

I like my Trek 1000. I got it on ebay relatively cheap. And it had already been upgraded some. It’s had some 105 stuff added, and Campagnolio wheels. I have since upgraded it some more with an Ultegra front derailleur, new ergo handlebars, brake levers. I also installed a threadless stem adaptor.
But it sounds like you plan on upgrading yours with stuff like STI shifters, etc. I think you might be better off finding a Trek 1.2 on sale. It will already have the new stuff. It probably wouldn’t cost a lot more, and you would have a much newer bike.
