The main use for a mouth guard is to keep the teeth from bashing into each other (the uppers into the lowers). I don't think the Shock Doctor guard protected the lower any better than the Shield mouth guard does. The Shield mouth guard has the advantage of having a better fit. As my teeth have move around with the braces, I have reboiled it several times to refit it. Works great.
In addition to the mouth guard, I also wear head gear with a cage covering my face. This has saved me more than once from being punched in the mouth.

What about lower braces? The one advantage I see for the Shock Doctor guard is that it protects both upper and lower teeth.
